Goodnik believes that one of the most important resources for a startup is the right workspace, which means not only a desk and a chair but an environment that is conducive to creativity and supportive of entrepreneurs. So Goodnik is partnering with AlleyNYC to launch an updated Goodniks in Residence program for 2013 to provide low-cost coworking space to social entrepreneurs. The program for 2013 is three times the size of our previous program, offering up to $75,000 worth of subsidized coworking space. The goal of the program is to support social entrepreneurs in their early stage. By providing space in a coworking communities, Goodnik and partner coworking spaces offer an important resource at a critical time.

AlleyNYC

Social entrepreneurs working at AlleyNYC is mutually beneficial; by engaging with social entrepreneurs, the coworking communities gain access to enthusiastic, idealist entrepreneurs with a unique perspective on business and social good. The exchange results in an increased awareness of social responsibility issues within the coworking community that will hopefully benefit all the community members in the long term. Coworking companies also benefit from increased awareness of the important role they play in helping entrepreneurs get started, and get the value of being associated with a social justice cause.

The Goodniks in Residence are an individuals or small teams selected by Goodnik. Goodnik members include social entrepreneurs starting for-profit “benefit corporations” as well as nonprofit organizations. The Goodniks in Residence are selected based on criteria defined jointly between Goodnik and the host coworking space.

Space in the program is limited to roughly 20 full or part-time members in 2013. Each participant is initially provided the space for a duration of 6 months, with the possibility to extend that by another six months, on mutual agreement between Goodnik and the applicant. Applications are being accepted for the first “class” until the end of the February, and thereafter on a rolling basis as space becomes available.

For the Goodnik in Residence program, Goodnik provides the PR, marketing and program support to attract the particpants, and is involved in drafting the criteria and reviewing the applicant pool. Resident Goodniks must abide by the rules and standards of the coworking community they join, and they can be removed from the program at any time for violating those standards or that of the program.
